Ren Water Day Master (壬)

Ren is yang water — rivers, seas and moving water. The Di Tian Sui pictures it as vast and ever-flowing, unstoppable when rooted and joined by Gui, yet affectionate when it combines.

Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar (see what the Day Master is). If yours is 壬, you are a Yang Water Day Master. Not sure? The free calculator shows it at the top of your chart.

The classical verse

The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), the most quoted text on the ten stems, gives 壬 a verse of eight four-character lines:

壬水汪洋,能洩金氣,剛中之德,周流不滯,通根透癸,沖天奔地,化則有情,從則相濟。
“Ren water is vast as the ocean and can drain the energy of metal. Firm at its centre, it flows everywhere without stagnating. Rooted below and with Gui showing above, it surges to heaven and rushes over the earth. When it transforms, it is affectionate; when it follows, it helps.”
— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 天干論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.

Reading the verse line by line

壬乃癸水之源,有分有合,運行不息,為百川,亦為雨露
“Ren is the source of Gui water; it divides and joins, moving without rest; it is the hundred rivers, and it is also rain and dew.”
— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 天干論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.

“Can drain the energy of metal.” Metal produces water, so Ren takes in metal’s energy. Metal is Ren’s resource.

“Rooted below and with Gui showing above.” If Ren meets the water frame 申子辰 and 癸 also appears among the stems, its momentum cannot be stopped:

若遇申子辰,而又透癸,則其勢不可遏也
“If it meets Shen, Zi and Chen, and Gui also shows, its momentum cannot be checked.”
— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 天干論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.

“When it transforms, it is affectionate.” 壬 combines with 丁 (丁壬合) to form wood, which in turn feeds 丁 fire — the commentary calls that “having feeling”.

“When it follows, it helps.” Born in summer, Ren can “follow” fire and earth: the summer earth, steamed by Ren water, becomes rain and dew.

Ren in the four seasons

  • Spring: wood drains water; metal support is valued.
  • Summer: fire and earth are strong; water is weak, and the “following” reading may apply.
  • Autumn: metal produces water; usually well supported.
  • Winter: in season, often too strong; earth to bank it and fire to warm it are the classic needs.

The ten gods for a 壬 Day Master

Every other stem in your chart takes a role relative to 壬. This is the ten gods table worked out for Ren Water; hidden stems inside the branches (see hidden stems) use the same table.

Strong or weak?

Whether a 壬 Day Master is strong or weak depends on the whole chart, above all the month branch. Ren peaks in 子 and is born in 申, with its storehouse in 辰. Water roots (亥, 子, water hidden in 申, 辰 and 丑) and metal strengthen it; wood, fire and earth reduce it. The general method is on the Day Master and useful god pages.

A word on personality descriptions

Many websites give each Day Master a fixed personality. The classical texts do not work that way: the verse above describes how 壬 behaves in different seasons and next to other elements, and the same 壬 reads very differently in a summer chart and a winter chart. We give the traditional images as tradition, for cultural study, not as a description of any real person.
